Teej is an auspicious festival celebrated in India when married and unmarried women keep a fast for their husbands or to get their desired husbands. This day is devoted to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Hartalika Teej Vrat is observed on the third day of the Shukla Paksha Tritiya in the Hindu month of Bhadrapada.
This year, Hartalika Teej will be celebrated on September 18. As per beliefs, the name Hartalika is derived from Harat (abduction) and Aalika (female friend). It is said that Goddess Parvati was taken by a close friend to a dense forest to hide her from her father, who wanted her to marry Lord Vishnu. On the other hand, the word also includes “har” which denotes Lord Shiva. Hence, devotees on this day try to pray for their desired husband.
According to a priest Subham Tiwari, Hartalika Teej 2023 is starting on September 17 at 11:08 AM. and will continue till 12:39 PM on September 18. The fast should be kept on September 18 as per the udya tithi.
To perform the puja, the ideal time is the morning but if that’s not possible, then Pradosh time, i.e. 07:18 PM to 09:38 PM is also considered auspicious. The devotees should take a bath in the early morning, wear clean clothes, and then conduct the puja.
There are three known Teej festivals celebrated in India, and Hartalika Teej is considered to be one of the most difficult fasts to perform. There are certain rules and methods to be kept in mind for performing the puja and keeping the fast. If you cannot perform the Nirjala fast (no water or food), then it is suggested that you consume some fruits during the fast.
Rishikesh is considered one of the holy places and every festival is celebrated with a grand gesture. Devotees from across the country visit here to perform puja, and you can visit Rishikesh on the auspicious day of Hartalika Teej. You can perform puja, seek blessings from Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, and have a holy bath in the river Ganga at Triveni Ghat.
