Akshay Kumar will soon be seen bringing the courageous life of Sardar Jaswant Singh Gill on the big screen with Mission Raniganj: The Great Bharat Rescue. Helmed by Tinu Suresh Desai, Mission Raniganj is a survival thriller based on the Raniganj Coalfields collapse of 1989 in West Bengal. The film stars Parineeti Chopra, Akshay Kumar, Ravi Kishan, Kumud Mishra, Pavan Malhotra, and Rajesh Sharma among others. Jaswant Singh Gill’s origins
Hailing from Sathiala in Amritsar, Jaswant Singh Gill was born on November 22, 1937, and was a coal mining officer who single-handedly saved 65 miner lives during the 1989 coal mine collapse in Raniganj, West Bengal. This happened to be the most successful coal mine rescue.
Jaswant Singh Gill’s bravery was awarded by the Limca Book of Records and World Book of Records
Late Sardar Jaswant Singh Gill’s bravery and his heroic act have been acknowledged at a global level. Recently it was learned that the Jaswant Singh Gill was also awarded the World Book of Records and the Limca Book of Records.
These two honours were given to the late Jaswant, as he successfully led the world’s largest coal mine mission, rescuing 65 coal miners in just 48 hours.
November 16 dedicated to Jaswant Singh Gill’s bravery
Besides these awards, Eastern Coalfields also paid a huge tribute to the life of the late Gill by naming November 16 as Rescue Day. This marks the observance for the day when we remember this unsung hero whose story is as incredible as he is.
Other accolades to Gill
Besides this, Jaswant Singh Gill has received two honorary reflects for his accomplishment of rescuing 65 coal workers. The All India Human Rights Council has given him the ‘Legend of Bengal’ award for 2022. RN Talks LLP, a business platform that encourages young people in the country, has given him the Vivekanand Karamveera Award for 2023. In 1991, Gill also won India’s highest Bravery Award, Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak, from the Honorable President of India.
Jaswant Singh Gill’s demise
On November 26, 2019, Jaswant Singh Gill passed away after a cardiac arrest. Jaswant Singh was 80 years old and he breathed his last at Amritsar, Punjab. Jaswant is survived by his wife Nirdosh Kaur, 2 sons and 2 daughters.
