Sachin Tendulkar had been invited by Saiyami Kher for a special screening of Ghoomer, after which she personally showed him her special bowling action.
Actress Saiyami Kher met her inspiration Sachin Tendulkar recently and demonstrated the Ghoomer style of bowling she learnt for her eponymous film. The actress had hosted a personal screening of her film Ghoomer and had invited Sachin as a guest. After the screening, Sachin had requested Saiyami to show him how she bowled with the left arm in the film.
Ghoomer, directed by R Balki, sees Saiyami play a batter who loses her dominant right arm in an accident. With the help of a former cricketer (played by Abhishek Bachchan), Saiyami’s character Anina learns to bowl left-arm spin and makes her way into the Indian team. The film has been praised, particularly its depiction of cricket.
The video posted by Saiyami on Tuesday shows her and Sachin on a makeshift cricket pitch. He says, “I’ve seen your action in the movie. And, I want to see it in real life.” When Saiyami admits that she’s nervous to perform in front of him, he reassures her. With that, Saiyami twists her body in her signature move, with her right arm tucked behind her back. She bowls the ball, which lands near the wickets at the far end. Sachin was left flabbergasted and said, “I’ve never played with anyone like this… with this action.” He then proceeds to shake her hand and the actress thanks him for coming to the screening.
The video had a very sweet caption which read, “What’s the one dream you had as a child that you never thought could never come true? Mine was that someday, I would get to meet @sachintendulkar my hero, my inspiration, my teacher. I have loved and learnt this game watching him play. I’ve bunked college to watch him play. I’ve had the loudest “Sachinnn Sachhhin” chant in the North Stand. So, I can’t seem to explain what this means to me.”
In the caption, Saiyami listed her favourite moments from Sachin’s career before revealing, “When I began acting, my friends ragged me and said, ‘Ja ja, acting kar. Someday Sachin will watch your film.’ And that became my goal. To work hard and hope that someday the Master will watch my work.”
Meeting Sachin had left her absolutely starstruck, the actress admitted. “And then, it happened, the God of Cricket saw a film in which I play a cricketer. The God of Cricket asked me to show him how I bowled the Ghoomer. Dreams really do come true. This. This part of my life is called happiness,” her caption concluded.
Despite positive reviews and glowing praise, Ghoomer has not performed well at the box office, earning just over Rs 4 crore in its first four days at the ticket window. Saiyami and Abhishek’s performances, however, have been widely appreciated.
