Jawan’s Hindi language collections have crossed the marks set by Gadar 2 and Shah Rukh Khan’s previous release Pathaan.
On Thursday, Sunny Deol’s Gadar 2 achieved a significant milestone. The film overtook the Hindi language box office collections of Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan, in process becoming the highest-grossing Hindi film in India ever. However, the celebratory moment lasted barely a day for the Anil Sharma ans Shah Rukh reclaimed the top spot with his next release Jawan overtaking Gadar 2 on Friday itself.
Pathaan, which released in January this year, netted Rs 543 crore in India. Of this, Rs 524 crore came from the Hindi version, the highest ever for a Hindi film. This was the first time a Bollywood film had breached the 400-crore mark, let alone 500 crores. Two dubbed films – Baahubali 2 (Rs 511 crore) and KGF Chapter 2 (Rs 435 crore) had led the race till then.
On Thursday, Gadar 2, which is now in its seventh week, earned Rs 45 lakh, taking its collection to Rs 524.75 crore, 30 lakhs over Pathaan’s final figures. This made it the highest-grossing Hindi film in India. The film is expected to end its run somewhere around the Rs 530-crore mark.
However, on Friday, Jawan – Shah Rukh Khan’s latest release – toppled Gadar 2 from the top spot in just 24 hours. Jawan earned Rs 4 crore on Friday, taking its total in Hindi to Rs 528 crore, much higher than Gadar 2 and Pathaan. The film is still going strong and is expected to cross Rs 550 crore easily. What’s even more impressive is that Jawan has earned Rs 57 crore net from its dubbed versions as well. No Hindi film has managed even half that amount in history.
Unlike Gadar 2, Jawan and Pathaan have both done impressively in the overseas market. While Gadar 2 has an overseas collection of $8 million, both the SRK movies have crossed $40 million each. Jawan’s worldwide collections now stand close to Rs 1030 crore as a result and it is closing in on Pathaan’s record of Rs 1050 crore. Over the weekend, it should cross the figure and become the highest grossing Indian film of the year.
