Jailer box office collections are nearing Rs 400 crore in just six days, overtaking hits like Varisu and Ponniyin Selvan 1.
Rajinikanth’s Jailer is continuing its record-breaking run at the box office. On its sixth day, the film yet again showed growth due to Tuesday being a national holiday on account of Independence Day. With the earnings from Tuesday, the film not only crossed Rs 350 crore but also became the highest-grossing Tamil film of the year. And it achieved this feat in under a week.
Trade sources say that Jailer earned Rs 36.50 crore net domestically on Tuesday, a 55% increase from its Monday earnings of Rs 23.55 crore. This includes a net collection of Rs 26.70 crore from tha Tamil version alone, where the film is still going housefull, registering occupancy of 81% across India. The film’s total domestic net collection after six days now stands at Rs 210 crore. Going by the current graph, it should cross Rs 300 crore domestically easily and may even look to go for a 350-crore lifetime haul.
Jailer has also done exceedingly well overseas, collecting an impressive $18 million in the foreign markets. In some countries, the Rajinikanth-starrer has done better business than Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan, the highest-grossing Indian film of the year and one of the best-performing Indian films ever overseas.
Jailer’s six day global gross now stands at Rs 392 crore. This makes it the highest-grossing Tamil film of the year, surpassing Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan 2 (Rs 345 crore), and Thalapathy Vjay-starrer Varisu (Rs 306 crore). Even more impressive is the fact that within six days, Jailer has also entered the top five highest-grossing Tamil films of all time. It currently sits at number four, only behind 2.0 (Rs 744 crore), Ponniyin Selvan 1 (Rs 488 crore), and Vikram (Rs 414 crore). The massive collection of 2.0 may be a target too high for Jailer but the film should surpass Vikram easily and make a run to cross PS1 soon as well.
