It may be true that heroes headline films but the actresses are often just as important. Some of the top actresses in India have, at times, commanded higher salary than their male counterparts and even led hit films at the box office. One such success story is this Bollywood heroine, who has starred in more blockbusters than her contemporaries, amassing a cumulative Rs 4000 crore gross at the box office, higher than anybody in Hindi film history.
India’s highest grossing actress
Films starring Kareena Kapoor have earned more money at the box office than the titles of any other actress in Bollywood history. As per Box Office India, Kareena is also the most successful modern day Bollywood heroine with 23 successful films under the belt, leading her sister Karisma, Katrina (both 22), and Rani Mukerji (21). Others like Priyanka Chopra (18) and Kajol (14) are way behind. These 23 films include 2 all-time blockbusters in Bajrangi Bhaijaan and 3 Idiots as well as several hits and blockbusters like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Aitraaz, Jab We Met, Bodyguard, and Good Newwz among others. All these films have given her a combined box office worldwide gross of over Rs 4000 crore.
Kareena Kapoor’s greatest hits
The reason Kareena stands at the top of the Bollywood food chain over her contemporaries like Priyanka Chopra, Anushka Sharma, and Deepika Padukone is because she has been part of some of the biggest hits in Bollywood history. This includes Bajrangi Bhaijaan, which alone grossed Rs 918 crore worldwide. Other actresses do have successful films too, particularly Deepika Padukone, but their cumulative gross falls short of Kareena’s figure. Down south, the biggest names like Samantha, Nayanthara, or Anushka Shetty also falter because barring a couple of exceptions, their films have not competed with Bollywood’s biggies at the box office.
Other highest grossing actresses from India
Apart from Kareena, there are a few other Indian actresses, whose films have grossed over Rs 3000 crore. These include Deepika Padukone, and Anushka Sharma. Anushka Shetty and Tamannaah Bhatia make it to the list courtesy the Baahubali franchise, which alone earned over Rs 2400 crore. Other actresses whose films have earned over Rs 2000 crore are Aishwarya Rai, Alia Bhatt, Priyanka Chopra, Katrina Kaif, and Nayanthara to name a few. Fatima Sana Sheikh and Sanya Malhotra make it to the list by virtue of starring in Dangal, which made Rs 2024 crore.
