Rajanna, a close associate of Chief Minister Siddaramalah suggested three more DCMs from the Veerashaiva Lingayat, SC/ST, and minority communities, asserting that the move will help Congress in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections

Cooperation minister and senior Congress functionary KN Rajanna has lobbied for three more Deputy Chief Ministers in Karnataka. Currently, DK Shivakumar, who belongs to the Vokkaliga community is the deputy CM in Karnataka’s four-month-old cabinet.

According to a TOI report, Rajanna, a close associate of Chief Minister Siddaramalah suggested three more DCMs from the Veerashaiva Lingayat, SC/ST, and minority communities, asserting that the move will help Congress in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

“My intention is the Congress should win the maximum number of seats in Karnataka. If that is to happen, one post (of DCM) should be given to all major communities,” he said.

Rajanna mentioned the example of the Lingayat community that had deserted the Congress before backing the party in the assembly polls.

“We should look to retain them by offering top post. I’ve decided to write a letter to the Congress high command in a couple of days. I’ll also be meeting senior leaders in Delhi in the first week of October and will try to convince them on this,” he stated.

On being asked if his statement would upset the present DCM, Shivakumar, Rajanna said, “Why would it? I haven’t spoken against anyone. Shivakumar is a DCM and party state unit president. He is ably organising the party, as he is a good organiser. I don’t think there is a need for him to get upset.”

Reactions to Rajanna’s Suggestions

Reacting to Rajanna’s statement, IT/BT minister Priyank Kharge said, “Anyone can place their opinion before the Congress central leadership… but I don’t feel there is any such proposal (for three more DCMs) before the high command.”

DCM Shivakumar refused to comment on his statement, however, his brother and Congress MP DK Suresh said, “You should ask Rajanna about it. He is the one running the government.”
