Anurag Kashyap’s crime drama Gangs of Wasseypur (GOW) has gained cult status among moviegoers. The two-part drama have helped many cast member of the film in making a successful career in Bollywood. Talents such as Manoj Bajpayee, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Pankaj Tripathi, Tigmanshu Dhulia, Huma Qureshi, Richa Chadha, and Piyush Mishra have earned loyal fan following due to their impressive acting chops to their interesting characters. 

However, one actor from the movie had to struggle even after the release of the film. In fact, after GOW, he had to struggle harder to find his footing in Bollywood, he’s none other than Vidhayak JP Singh aka Satyakam Anand. 

Satyakam Anand’s background

Satyakam hails from a humble background in Arrah, Bihar. Satyakam wasn’t good with his studies. His elder brother was studying at Patna Science College, and he was pushed to pursue theatre by his parents. At first, he didn’t understand the world of acting. But gradually he started getting drawn towards the art of theatre. 

When Satyakam had suicidal thoughts

To pursue his dream of becoming a seasoned actor, Satyakam wanted to go to NSD, Delhi. For the same, he even fought with his father and left his home twice for the same. However, he couldn’t manage to secure admission to the institute. Meanwhile, he joined the Ashmita Theatre group. When Satyakam failed to join NSD, he got depressed, broken, and felt heavily demotivated. He wasn’t ready to go back home and didn’t want to live. While speaking in Josh Talks, Satyakam recalled when he thought, “Ab reh ke karunga kya, itna bhaar tha mere pe ki maine socha ki sabse asaan hoga suicide karna.” However, he witnessed the death of a stranger standing opposite him on a busy road, and that’s when he decided to strive rather than give up. 

Life changed after Gangs of Wasseypur but for the worst? 

Satyakam and his friends made the film Dvandva (2009), and they decided to keep a screening of it for directors and their relatives. Satyakam asked his wife to help him invite Anurag Kashyap. After the film, an excited Anurag met Satyakam and offered him JP Singh in Gangs of Wasseypur. After the movie was released, Satyakam was unemployed for many years as he was not getting good work, and had been approached for 1-2 scenes in a movie. 

His struggle became tough after GOW as he was living in Mumbai with his family, and there were expenses that he had to look after. There was a phase when he had to mortgage his wife’s jewellery. Satyakam had auditioned for Dhadak. but he refused to work on it, as he was not happy with the character. After saying no to many projects, he was offered Sherni, series Grahan, Dr Arora, Ab Dilli Dur Nahin, and Love-All.
